Course Description

Course Description: Defining climate, past climates, radiation and climate, climate models, Greenhouse effect. Global average models: temperature and heat balance, time dependence. Energy balance models. Convective adjustment climate models. 2-D climate models. Finite difference methods, stability and consistence analysis of methods applied two simplified atmospheric dynamics equations. Anatomy of atmospheric general circulation models. Vertical coordinates. Clouds, radiation, sland surface, planatery boundary layer, cumulus parameterizations. Regional climate modelling. Course Objectives: To explore the hierarchy of models used to investigate and understand the climate system. To explore the range of models, assess the strengths and weaknesses of each class of models and develop a sense of which model is most appropriate for answering different research questions. To teach the fundamentals of climate modeling. To teach how to run a regional climate model (RegCM) and use it in a research problem.

At the end of this course, students who successfully pass this course should be able to
I. Understand the fundamental principles of the science contained in different complexity of
climate models.
II. Understand the strength and weaknesses of different complexity models for different
climate research problems.
III. Analyze the stability and consistency of finite different methods for staggered horizontal
grid structures.
IV. Learn how a regional climate model is implemented, conduct a simulation and analyze the
results.
