Description

In the framework of the MSCA Cofund program “MISCEA” (Modelling and Interdisciplinarity Science for the Ecological trAnsition), we are launching a call for applications to select an ethics advisor for the 2nd wave of MISCEA thesis offers. The MISCEA Ethics Advisor will be responsible for formulating recommendations and ensuring their follow-up throughout the project.
MISCEA is a doctoral programme coordinated by the École nationale des ponts et chaussées and co-funded by the European Union as part of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) – COFUND under grant agreement number #101126720. This program aims to create a network of 18 doctoral fellows (MISCEA PhD fellows), focusing on the central theme of the ecological and energy transitions.
There are currently twelve MISCEA thesis offers published on Euraxess, covering a wide diversity of subjects and disciplines. Interested candidates are invited to apply for these thesis offers until April 30th and MISCEA auditions are expected to take place on May 15th and 16th, 2025 (online).

ESR06 – Design and monitoring of tunnels facing energy and numerical transitions – Euraxess link
ESR09 – Biocides in urban runoff: modelling emissions and transfer to the receiving environment for different stormwater management scenarios – Euraxess link
ESR10 – Sustainability and digital transition in the construction industry can 3DCP emerging technologies help? – Euraxess link
ESR11 – Bio-based construction materials lca – Euraxess link
ESR12 – Will electric mobility really contribute to the ecological transition of cities? An economic evaluation of scaling-up scenarios for the Paris region – Euraxess link
ESR13 – How do energy prices shape the demand for mobility: a retrospective and prospective analysis – Euraxess link
ESR14 – Durability of low-carbon concretes: experimental study and modelling of carbonation and chloride diffusion – Euraxess link
ESR15 – Multiscale comparison and merging of dual polarization weather radar rainfall measurements – Euraxess link
ESR16 – Structural design and optimisation of thin shell shallow foundation – Euraxess link
ESR17 – The thermo-mechanical behaviour of planetary soils: Mars and the Moon – Euraxess link
ESR18 – Low-carbon, decentralized cooling systems in Côte d’Ivoire – Euraxess link

For your information, here are the PhD thesis topics selected during the first call:
ESR01 – LES Windturbines – Euraxess link
ESR02 – Eco-innovative shape memory architected dampers for the seismic protection of infrastructures – Euraxess link
ESR03 – Wave interaction with offshore wind turbine foundations in the coastal zone – effects of wave non-linearity, wave breaking and complex flow structure – Euraxess link
ESR04 – Experimental Investigation of Caprock Sealing in Geological Formations: Implications for Natural White Hydrogen Storage – Euraxess link
ESR05 – Offshore wind turbine monopile foundation: experimental and numerical study of soil-structure interaction – Euraxess link
ESR06 – Design and monitoring of tunnels facing energy and numerical transitions – Euraxess link
ESR07 – Multiphysics simulation of 3D concrete printing process: from printability to structural resilience – Euraxess link
ESR08 – Public policies making and reception for indoor environmental quality – Micropollutants source control in dwellings – Euraxess link
ESR09 – Biocides in urban runoff: modelling emissions and transfer to the receiving environment for different stormwater management scenarios – Euraxess link

The MISCEA Ethics Advisor (MEA) will:

  • Formulate ethical recommendations for each candidate’s thesis proposal.
  • Participate in the selection committee (May 15th-16th, 2025) for thesis topics requiring specific ethical considerations and assess the candidate’s ability to integrate the recommendations into their doctoral work if selected.
  • Throughout the project, conduct periodic follow-ups (mid-term and at the end of the thesis) on topics requiring ethical monitoring to ensure that the recommendations and/or measures formulated during the selection process have been implemented by the relevant MISCEA PhD fellows and to evaluate their application.

The MEA will participate in the auditions alongside the MISCEA selection committee, composed of internal and external expert evaluators.

The duties of the MEA during the auditions are the following:
  • By the deadline for candidate dossier submission, the MEA will receive the detailed thesis topics (maximum of 5 pages) to assess potential ethical concerns for each project.
  • Concurrently with the work of MISCEA selection committee, the MEA will provide recommendations for each thesis project, especially concerning potential ethical risks or issues that may arise during the proposed research.
  • The appointed a MISCEA Ethics Advisor will participate in the candidate interviews and may ask questions related to the ethical aspects of the proposed research, ensuring that each candidate adheres to the necessary ethical standards.
  • After the interviews, the MEA will provide their final written recommendations regarding the ethical dimensions of each candidate’s thesis project.

Requirements:
If you are interested in applying for the position of MISCEA Ethics Advisor, we invite you to contact us at miscea-program@enpc.fr and send us:

  • Your detailed CV, including any previous experience as an ethics advisor (if applicable).
  • A brief statement on your expertise in research ethics and your experience in evaluating ethical issues in research.
Therefore, particular attention will be given to applications with previous experience in research topics in the following areas:
  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Geotechnics
  • Environmental sciences, urban hydrology, modeling
  • Technology management
  • Materials, life cycle assessment
  • Transportation economics
  • Civil engineering
  • Environmental sciences
  • Structural mechanics
  • Environmental and development economics
Your contribution will have a real impact on the choice of MISCEA PhD fellows, helping to train the next generation of researchers on these essential issues.

In agreement with the values of the programme, French law and European principles, it is imperative that all contributors of
