Course Description

Course Description: The course covers the economic theory and empirical perspectives on the spot and future markets for main energy sources (oil, natural gas, coal, and electricity). The course also examines the political economy of energy use, economic growth, and the environment. Finally, the economics of government regulation for each energy source market is discussed in local, regional, international, and global policy contexts.

Competences

1-) Competency in using the basic physical properties of oil, natural gas, coal, and electricity and their
corresponding conventional and unconventional production processes in analyzing the observed
government intervention, market structures and levels of prices.
2-) Ability to use economic theory of resource extraction to forecast future prices, direction of price
changes.
3-) Ability to assess the impact of various regulatory pricing mechanisms on government revenues,
investment decisions, and consumer prices.
4-) Competency to assess the economic viability of alternative energy related projects and ideas.
5-) Ability to develop energy policies
