Course Description

The goal of the subject, that the studnets get familiar with the physical properties of the main type of rocks. It is introducing to the students the most common types of landslide problems, their solutions, the risk analysis in the field of engineering geology, the importance of the in?situ stresses in the rock mechanical design. The students get to know the theoretical background of the rock mass classification systems, the relations between the different rock mass classification systems. They learn to use these systems for rock engineering design in normal and weak rock masses. With the completion of the subject they learn to use the introduced design methods and monitoring through examples.

student is able to describe and use the engineering geological properties of the most important rocks,recognize the problematic rocks in engineering geological point of view, able to use the most important rock mass classification systems (Q, GSI),able to use the generalized Hoek?Brown failure criterion,able to classify the weak and heterogeneous rock masses and according to the classification able to determine the basic strength parameters of them,able to introduce the solution of a given engineering geological design task,able to use the international technical literature to solve a given task, able to express her/his thoughts orderly in written and oral.
