Description

This six-month internship focuses on analyzing explanted stent implants from human patients. These rare samples provide valuable insights into the biological and chemical evolution of stents within coronary arteries over time. The project will utilize scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to capture systematic cross-sectional images of the samples, aiming to investigate potential corrosion, tissue damage, and calcification growth on both the stent’s metal surface and polymer coatings. Immunohistological analyses will also be conducted on the same samples in collaboration with LVTS at Bichat Hospital.

Additionally, the AI-based system CRESt, developed in partnership with MIT, will be used for data acquisition and project management. The intern will collaborate with MIT developers to adapt the CRESt system specifically for this project. Funded by the French ANR under the project name “APEX-STENT,” this initiative aims to create an open-access, comprehensive database documenting the microstructure, chemistry, and biology of stents and surrounding arterial tissues post-implantation in humans. This database will support future research on new stent materials and a deeper understanding of long-term implant-patient interactions.

Start Date: February 2025

Potential Continuation: A 36-month PhD position is available following the internship, funded by French ANR.
