Course Description

The aim of this course is for students to acquire appropriate specific and general competencies to gain an in-depth understanding of the technological issues concerning informatics technology, understanding their theoretical and practical operation by applying the applicable fundamental laws and concepts and using the technology to set up devices and systems. The contents are divided into four subject areas, ordered pedagogically to encourage motivated and sequential learning. The course starts with a brief introduction to electrostatics and direct current circuits as a basis for acquiring the knowledge of physics required to build electrical circuits and understand the behavior of materials. This leads on to semiconductor physics, dealing with issues determined by conduction phenomena, underlying the design and application of the diode as an elementary semiconductor device. Moving on from this conceptual basis to more complex technology, we will examine the MOS transistor and CMOS logical circuits as key elements for the operation of very popular computer technology devices today, like Tablet PCs or smartphones. This course includes six laboratory sessions during which students will apply the knowledge acquired and assemble and analyse the operation of electrical and semiconductor circuits and design and report on a logic circuit.
