Course Description

Course Description: Definitions. Overall model of hazards risk management: Identify and manage issues, Establish risk management framework, Develop risk evaluation criteria, Establish policies, Establish risk management and strategic context, Develop risk evaluation criteria. Identify Risks: Identify and describe hazards, Identify and describe community, Identify and describe environment. Scope vulnerability: Generate risk statements, Revisit risk evaluation criteria, Risk perceptions. Analyze Risks: Determine likelihood and consequence, Modeling techniques – physical, virtual, mathematical, intuitive. Evaluate Risks: Compare the risk evaluation criteria with the levels of risk, Prioritize risks using the risk levels, Determine which risks are acceptable. Mitigate Risks: Generate risk mitigation options, Consider the assessment criteria for risk mitigation options, Assess and select appropriate mix of risk mitigation options, Insurance, Risk-based decision making, Prepare and implement risk mitigation schedule and plan. Communicate and consult: Public input – surveys, focus groups and partnerships, Communicating actions and plans to the public, Building public-private partnerships, Marketing risk mitigation management and actions, Monitor and review. Case studies – Application of the Hazards Risk Management Process to actual situations. Course Objectives: Disscussing social impacts of disasters. Understanding the relationship size of disaster impacts and community structure. Understanding building disaster resilent communities is improving social capacity. Discussing lessons from past disasters.
