Course Description

Stem cells: their potential and their niche. Division and self-renewal. Plutipotent stem cells. Adult stem cell niches. Hematopoietic stem cells. Cell reprogramming and the human cell model to study development and disease. Neural stem cells as progenitor cells. Isolation and culturing of neural stem cells. Neural stem cell heterogeneity. Neural stem cells and neurogenesis. Neurogenesis in adult hippocampus. Cellular organization of the subventricular zone in the ddult human brain: a niche of neural stem cells. The spinal cord neural stem cell niche. Neural stem cells and regenerative medicine.

At the completion of the course students will be able to: – Define stem cells – Identify types of stem cells – Define the detailed steps of neural stem cell formation, maintenance, differentiation and aging – Critically analyse scientific papers on neural stem cells – Describe the medical uses for neural stem cells

at least a Bachelor Knowledge of cellular, molecular and developmental biology anatomy of the central nervous system.
