The interdisciplinary Summer School “Sustainable farming and food systems in the EU law and policy framework” will be held from 24th to 28th July 2023 in hybrid mode, for a total amount of 40 hours training. The Summer School is part of a three-year Jean Monnet Module SUSTAIN “EU Law on Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture after the European Green Deal”, co-funded under the EU Erasmus+ Programme and coordinated by Professor Mariagrazia Alabrese.The Course will provide participants with an understanding of the European legal and policy framework of sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural and food systems within an interdisciplinary learning context. In particular, the political and legal implications of the transformative approach adopted by the EU (e.g., with the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork strategy, the new CAP 2023-2027) will be thoroughly analyzed during the Summer School.The course will also deal with the series of complex European and global challenges facing the European food system. These include climate change and environmental degradation, inequalities in the food supply chain, and food security concerns caused by the war in Ukraine.The language of instruction is English, and a final assessment test is foreseen at the end of the course, in the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire.


The Course is intended for students coming from different backgrounds, PhD candidates, young researchers and professionals working in the field of law, social sciences, agricultural engineering, economics and management, officials working in national, international, and European Institutions.

Educational Objectives 

The Summer School aims to provide participants with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to understand the issues emerging from the development of the EU legal and policy framework on farming and food systems.Specifically, by the end of the Summer School, participants will be able to: (a) handle the main EU legal aspects of the agri-food system and their impact on climate change adaptation and mitigation; (b) understand the landscape in which EU policies related to the food sector operate and of the role of EU Institutions in this framework; (c) manage the conceptual frameworks on the European model of Agriculture; (d) identify policy options based on the many challenges that impact on the EU agri-food system, such as climate change and food insecurity.

Teaching Methods 

The classes will consist of lectures, seminars, discussions, role-playing and simulation games. Case studies sessions and Q&A sessions will be planned in order to stimulate the exchanges between trainers and trainees, promoting the creation of a network among all the participants within an interdisciplinary environment.

Course Schedule

The course will focus on the European legal and policy framework of sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural and food systems. Therefore, during the five-day training, the teaching staff will  cover different topics, such as: the pursuit of sustainability in food systems; the international and EU climate regime and its evolution; the threat to European food security; the EU Common Agricultural Policy, and the European Green Deal and its Strategies (e.g. the Farm to Fork Strategy and the Biodiversity Strategy), and others.The programme takes into account the diverse backgrounds of the participants, and is organized to provide them with valuable interdisciplinary tools to deeply understand the issues arising from the European agri-food legal and policy context.

Admission application

The enrolment application is to be received by 12th June 2023, 23:59 and submitted exclusively on-line. A curriculum vitae, a valid identity document and the self-declaration concerning the applicable tuition fee drafted according to the format available in this webpage should be attached to the application. It is up to the candidate to attach other documents deemed relevant to the application (e.g., disability certificates).

Enrolment fees

The Course fee is 100,00 EUR for participants that are enrolled in undergraduate and master’s degree courses at the time of the application and maintain the student status for the entire duration of the Summer School, and 400,00 EUR for PhD students, professionals, academics and other participants.The enrolment fee includes attendance costs, teaching materials and lunch provided by the School’s canteen on all five days of the course. Travel and accommodation in Pisa during the course are the responsibility of each participant.According to an agreement between the organizers of this summer school and the Director of the Master of Law (LL.M.) in Food Law of the Luiss University, a reduction of 20% is granted to current and graduated students from the Master of Law (LL.M.) in Food Law of the Luiss University.According to a memorandum that is currently being finalized between the Dirpolis Institute of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), a reduction of 10% is granted to participants that are employed in a company associated with ICC at the time of the application.


Applicants intending to apply for admission to the Summer School should follow the application procedure that will open in the second half of January:

(1) registration, by signing up on the Esse3 platform;

(2) pre-enrolment, to be carried out via the link that registered students will receive by e-mail once the application deadline has expired;

(3) payment of the tuition fee, by following the instructions that applicants will receive during the application process (after the pre-enrollment).

After the pre-enrollment and the payment are successful, applicants are admitted to the Summer School.

Educational Qualification issued

After three months from the end of the course, the Sant’Anna School will issue a certificate of attendance with value to the extent permitted by law, and with the details of the ECTS obtained.
